The Market of Three Baskets

On Saturday, Mama took Emily to the bustling (busy and noisy) market to sell beans. “Today,” said Mama, “you will be the counter.”

The beans came in three sizes of container. A big basket held exactly 100 beans. A small bag held exactly 10 beans. And loose beans were counted as 1 each.

A basket held 100 beans (hundreds), a bag held 10 beans (tens), and a loose bean counted as 1 (ones).

2. Explain why the 3 in 347 means three hundred, not three.

Because the 3 sits in the hundreds place, so it is worth three hundreds, which is 300.

✓ Understood if the child refers to the digit's position in the hundreds place giving its value.

3. Build the number 528 using baskets, bags and beans.

Five baskets, two bags and eight loose beans (5 hundreds, 2 tens and 8 ones).

✓ Understood if the child gives 5 baskets/hundreds, 2 bags/tens and 8 beans/ones.

4. Where in real life do you see hundreds, tens and ones?

For example, in money, house numbers, or when counting large groups of things.
