The Poem in the Storm

The rain hammered the roof. Tryphonia had to write a poem about the storm. “Just say it was loud and wet,” shrugged Grace. But Tryphonia wanted the reader to feel it.

“I’ll use a simile (a comparison using ‘like’ or ‘as’),” said Tryphonia. She wrote: The thunder growled like a hungry lion. “Now you can almost hear it.”

“Then a metaphor (saying one thing is another, without ‘like’ or ‘as’),” she went on. The sky was a black drum, beaten by the wind. “The sky is not really a drum, but calling it one paints a stronger picture.”
