The Great Swing Push

At the park, Emily sat on the swing. “Give me a push!” she called. Papa pushed her back, a force (a push or a pull that makes things move). Whoosh! She flew forward.

“A push moves something away from you,” said Papa. Emily pushed the roundabout (the spinning platform) and it began to turn.

Then Pepper the dog tugged her lead. Emily pulled it back towards her. “A pull moves something towards you,” she said.

A push moves something away from you, while a pull moves something towards you.

3. What does gravity do? Give an example.

Gravity is an invisible pull from the Earth that pulls everything downwards, for example it pulled Emily down the slide.

✓ Understood if the child says gravity pulls things down and gives an example.

4. How could you make a ball roll further?

By giving it a bigger, harder push, which makes it go faster and further.

✓ Understood if the child links a bigger or harder push to the ball rolling further.

Maths Moment: 3 pushes then 4 more pushes: 3 + 4 = 7 pushes altogether.
