Christian’s Market Stacks
At the market, Uncle Christian stacked oranges in piles of five. “Count the piles,” he said, “and you can count all the oranges, fast.”
One pile: 5. Two piles: 10. Three piles: 15. “Look!” said Emily. “They end in 5, then 0, then 5, then 0.” That is the pattern (a repeating rule) of the 5 times table.
“Four fives are 20. Five fives are 25,” she chanted. Counting in fives was much quicker than counting every single orange.
