Reading a playscript; speech and dialogue

Ask each question, then compare. A child’s own words are perfect as long as the idea is right.

1. How is a playscript different from a normal story?

A playscript shows each speaker's name first, then the words they say, and it is written to be acted out.

✓ Understood if the child notes the name comes before the spoken words and that it is meant to be performed.

2. What do the words inside (brackets) tell you?

They tell you what the character does, such as pointing or licking a nose (the actions).

✓ Understood if the child says the brackets give the character's actions.

3. What clue solved the mystery?

The sticky paw prints on the floor, which led straight to Pepper's basket.

✓ Understood if the child names the sticky paw prints leading to Pepper.

4. Act out this play with someone, who will be Pepper?

This is an acting activity, sharing out the parts, with someone taking the role of Pepper the dog.

✓ Understood if the child engages with acting it out and assigns the Pepper part.

Maths Moment: The mango had 8 equal pieces and Pepper ate 4, so she ate 4/8, which is the same as 1/2 (a half).
