Emily’s Hungry Sunflower

Emily planted a sunflower seed and it grew tall and happy. Then one week it began to droop (bend down, weak and sad). “What is wrong?” she asked.

“A plant has needs, just like you,” said Papa. “Let us check them one by one.”

“Does it have water?” The soil was dry as dust, so Emily watered it. “Does it have light?” The pot sat in a dark corner, so Emily moved it to the sunny window.

1. What four things does a plant need?

Water, light, air and good soil.

✓ Understood if the child names all four (water, light, air, soil).

2. Match each part, roots, stem, leaves, to its job.

The roots drink water, the stem holds the plant up, and the leaves catch the light.

✓ Understood if the child matches all three parts to their jobs.

3. Why did moving the pot to the window help?

Because the pot had been in a dark corner, and moving it to the window gave the plant the light it needs.

✓ Understood if the child links the window to giving the plant light.

4. What would happen to a plant left in a dark cupboard?

Without light it would droop and weaken and could not grow properly.

✓ Understood if the child says a plant without light would droop or fail to grow.

Maths Moment: 5 cm each week for 4 weeks: counting in 5s, 5, 10, 15, 20. So it grew 20 cm in total.
