“Who has more?” asked Mama. Daisy looked. “Me! I have more grapes.”

Comparing amounts (more and fewer)

Ask each question, then compare. A child’s own words are perfect as long as the idea is right.

1. Who had more grapes?

Daisy had more grapes.

✓ Understood if the child says Daisy / the fuller plate.

2. Who had fewer?

Pepper had fewer grapes.

✓ Understood if the child says Pepper / the emptier bowl.

3. How did Daisy make it fair?

She shared two of her grapes with Pepper, so the plates were nearly the same.

✓ Understood if the child explains she gave some of hers to Pepper to even them out.

Maths Moment: The bigger pile has more, the smaller pile has fewer; moving some across until the piles match makes them equal.
