The Fair-Share Picnic

Emily, Pepper the dog and Papa went for a picnic. Papa held up one round pizza. “There are two of us to share it,” said Papa. “How do we make it fair (equal for everyone)?”

Emily cut the pizza straight down the middle into two equal pieces. “Each piece is one half (one of two equal parts),” she said. “We write it as ½.”

Then two friends arrived, so now four people had to share. Emily cut each half in half again. Now there were four equal pieces. “Each piece is one quarter (one of four equal parts), we write it ¼.”
